Quick Synopsis

Achieve™ aims to document the powerful, uplifting story of the central guiding role that pastoral care anchors in UK school systems empowering so many in their journeys as learners from primary to senior school to success as emerging adults.

Achieve™ aims to trace the history of pastoral care in the U.K. as a whole-school approach to creating the ethos of wellbeing that culminates in better engagement and improved academic achievement of learners.

Starting in 1974 with Michael Marland’s seminal book: Pastoral Care (London: Heinemann, 1974) and his initial use of the words ‘pastoral care’, Achieve™ aims to document from the public domain how the term evolved from meaning looking after the total welfare of the pupil to a central task of the school itself school, planned and institutionalized through pastoral roles and structures not simply supporting the academic work.

Through interviews with pastoral staff and reviews of pastoral conversations inspired by real life, Achieve™ aims to reveal the pastoral stage for optimal learning that allows students to engage fully in their education without unnecessary barriers or distractions supporting pupils’ development.

Each journey in Achieve™ aims to document pastoral goals that are foundational in British schools: enhanced student wellbeing, improved academic performance, positive school climate and reduced exclusion and disengagement.

Because pastoral guidance is one bright shining step to reduce youth crime, exploitation and the crisis that has exploded across the country, Achieve™ is without doubt today’s most relevant, human story in the U.K. and for the Nations.
